The 991 is the 7th generation Porsche 911, unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motorshow. The new car had an entirely new platform with a design by Michael Mauer that is an evolutionary progression from the 996 and 997 generations.
The 991 is slightly longer than the 997 on an increased wheelbase. A new transaxle was developed so that the rear wheels could be moved 76 millimetres (3 in) backward in relation to the position of the engine, which significantly improves the weight distribution and cornering performance of the new 911. Due to the use of high-strength steels, aluminium and some composites the weight has been reduced to 1,380 kg for the manual Carrera rising to 1605kg or the four wheel drive Turbo .

Following an introduction at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 991 received a mid-cycle facelift for the 2016 model year. The updated Porsche 911 (at Porsche internally referred to as 991.2 or 991 II) introduced new styling including updated front and rear bumpers, new dual exhaust pipes along with new head and tail lights and options, along with all new, 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engines across the range. Marking the first time the base 911 models had turbocharged engines

DEFECT #1 - AIR BAGS:ON-OFF SWITCH ASSEMBLY

Description
Equipment description: child seating system air bag deactivation kit for use on 1997-1998 911 carrera s, carrera 4, carrera 4s, and turbo (1997 model only), part no.  993 803 283 00, and 1997-1998 boxster model vehicles, part nos.  996 803 283 00 and 996 803 083 00.  Due to a manufacturing problem, the contact buckle (which is part of the kit) does not deactivate the air bag(s).

Consequence
In the event of a crash, this results in the deployment of the air bag(s) which could result in severe injury or death to the child seat occupant.

Corrective Action
Dealers will install a modified air bag deactivation kit.

Notes
Owner notification is expected to begin march 2, 1998.  Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact porsche at 1-800-545-8039.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).
