Designed by Wolfgang Mobius the 928 was originally intended to replace the 911, with a wider appeal and more of a Grand Tourer than out and out sports car. The 928 is also the companies first mass produced car to be powered by a V8 engine. During the cars 17 year span (1978-95) it evolved considerably and has been powered by V8 engines of 4.5, 4.7 5.0 and 5.4ltrs.

The first Series car, originally introduced in 1977 and powered by a 4.5 litre V8 of 219bhp, Porsche upgraded the engine from mechanical to electronic fuel injection in 1980 for US models, although power remained the same.. The S variant was introduced in 1980 powered by a 4.7 litre engine for the European market and 1983 in the USA, European versions debuted with 300 PS and were upgraded to 310 for 1984. Externally, the S wore new front and rear spoilers and sported wider wheels and tires than the older variant.

In the UK the 928S was renamed 928S2 from 1984 retaining the old name elsewhere. 1984 model year 928S retained the 4.7 litre engine of 1983, though with an increased output from 300PS to 310PS, in US cars the 4.7 litre engine was replaced by a 5 litre DOHC unit with four valves per cylinder. The European market cars got, Bosch LH-Jetronic injection and 4-speed automatic transmission added (previously only available in North America, the torque tube was shortened in line with the previous years US model, Bosch EZF ignition system using dual distributors makes debut. allowing for increased compression and torque, Bosch ABS brakes became optional for the first time in Porsche and the front suspension was improved.

For 1985 the European specification remained largely unchanged, the US cars got a new 5.0 litre 32-valve Bosch LH-Jetronic injection and Bosch EZF ignition 288 hp engine increasing top speeds to 155mph. And Australian cars featured a special two-valve 4.7 L engine option M151. The European market cars had a new LH-Jetronic control box design, new style front seats, redesigned door panels when multi speaker stereo was ordered. The gearbox syncromesh was changed to a Borg-Warner design with a shorter gear lever.

The Series 4 made its debut, in late 1986 as a 1987 model year car. Updated with a larger 4957cc (5 ltr) V8 engine driving through a new ingle-disc clutch in manual transmission cars, or a larger torque converter in Automatics. Styling updates was significantly cleaned up to give the S4 a sleeker appearance, with new lighting, and front and rear bumpers.
